Annual Meeting News
Connect in Washington, DC
This month AAAAI members can access the 2009 Annual Meeting Preliminary Program online, which offers a first look at all the programs and sessions taking place. With nearly 400 sessions to choose from, the 2009 Annual Meeting will address cutting-edge research and clinical topics, and provide outstanding opportunities to network within the allergy/immunology specialty. Check the Preliminary Program for more information on the scientific and educational sessions highlighted here.
Food Allergy and Complementary & Alternative Medicine Themes
In line with two initiatives of AAAAI President Hugh A. Sampson, MD, FAAAAI, a variety of sessions at the Annual Meeting revolve around the topics of food allergy and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).This year's Plenary Sessions will include the latest information and dialog on food allergy. During Saturday's Presidential Plenary, Food Allergy: Where Things Stand in 2009, Sampson will serve a dual role as both moderator and speaker. Joining him as speakers are Clare Mills, BSc, PhD, and Stephan D. Bischoff, MD. Topics include new diagnostic methods under investigation for the identification and monitoring of food allergy, novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of food allergy and the immunologic effects of novel therapeutic strategies.
Sunday's Plenary focus is The Crossroads between Asthma & COPD. On Monday, we will present Atopic Dermatitis: From Genes to the Treatment, and we will close on Tuesday with Eosinophilic Esophagitis: The New Allergic Disease.
Sessions highlighting CAM topics include the Symposium, The Science of Alternative Medicine in Allergy: A Tribute to Stephen Straus, MD, which takes place on Saturday, March 14, from 10:45 am to 12 pm. Straus was instrumental in bringing a strong scientific agenda to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), which is the Federal Government's lead agency for scientific research on CAM.
The Symposium, with Sampson as moderator, covers the use of CAM in allergy, as well as the scientific basis for the use of vitamins, natural antioxidants and traditional Chinese medicine as employed in allergic diseases.
Focus On Allied Health
The Allied Health Annual Meeting Program Committee is pleased to present the Advanced Practice Course on Friday, March 13, from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Designed to provide a program for nurse practitioners and physician assistants that is unique to the allergy practice, this day-long course highlights case studies in allergy, immunology and allergic disease. The session concludes with an informative panel discussion, Navigating the AAAAI Annual Meeting, helping attendees determine which sessions best meet their educational needs and develop their Annual Meeting agendas by allowing time to discuss session options with their peers.
More information on this course is available on the Allied Health Professionals Assembly (AHPA) Web page, located in the Members Only section of the AAAAI Web site, www.aaaai.org.
Prepare for the National Asthma Educator Exam
In partnership with the Association of Asthma Educators (AAE), the AAAAI will host a National Asthma Educator Certification Review Course in conjunction with the Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 15, from 12:30 to 5:30 pm, and Monday, March 16, from 7:15 am to 5:30 pm. This course prepares participants to sit for the National Asthma Educator Certification Exam and provides an in-depth review of asthma education based on the National Asthma Educator Certification Exam matrix."The role of the Asthma Educator has increased over the past decade as research has shown the importance of a well educated, informed patient in the management of asthma. Asthma Education Certification assures that information obtained from a Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C) is based on scientifically sound concepts of disease management," said Jan Tippett, RN, AE-C, one of four instructors for the course.
The target audience includes physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers, health educators, occupational therapists and physical therapists.
If you seek to become a credentialed asthma educator, take advantage of the National Asthma Educator Certification Review Course at the Annual Meeting. Since it's only offered every other year, your next opportunity will be at the 2011 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.
Asthma Adherence/Communication Course
Developing Clinical Skills to Promote Adherence and Maximize Asthma Outcomes, which was offered online in past years, is being offered in person at the Annual Meeting. This course assists attendees in identifying the reasons why patients don't adhere to healthcare providers' plans, and allows them to develop skills to encourage patients to follow these plans with the goal of ultimately improving adherence. The course, taking place on Friday, March 13, has both morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session is lecture format with five speakers reviewing the topic. During the afternoon session, attendees rotate through two 90-minute workshops where they will learn motivational interviewing techniques and clinical strategies to promote adherence.
"Attendees will gain a better understanding of why their patients may be reluctant to follow asthma treatment plans, and learn strategies and communication skills to help these patients reconsider the importance of taking their medications as prescribed," said Andrew G. Weinstein, MD FAAAAI, Secretary of the Health outcomes, Education, Delivery and Quality (HEDQ) Interest Section and moderator of the course.
World Allergy Forum
The AAAAI and the World Allergy Organization (WAO) are jointly sponsoring the World Allergy Forum: New Insights into Immunotherapy for Allergic Disorders. This Symposium takes place on Tuesday, March 17, from 10:45 am to 12 pm. AAAAI President Hugh A. Sampson, MD, FAAAAI, and WAO President G. Walter Canonica, MD, will serve as moderators with speakers representing countries from around the world.Topics include the effects of sublingual immunotherapy for the treatment and prevention of pediatric asthma, and the evaluation of novel immunotherapeutic strategies to calm allergic responses.
