Dear colleagues:

May is National Asthma Awareness Month, making it an appropriate time to focus on the visibility and the credibility of our specialty. I am pleased to report that the AAAAI and the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology (ACAAI) recently joined forces to develop a cooperative Rapid Response Communications Strategy. This tactical policy ensures that issues of immediate national concern to our specialty will be addressed promptly, decisively and with the unified voice of our two respected organizations.

As noted in the May issue of AAAAI News, we just completed some changes to the AAAAI Web site that facilitate outreach to the media and to the public. Log on to the Members Only section and you will find new resources for promoting your practice and the specialty. The section features public relations tips, tools and tactics in an easy-to-navigate format. There are timely press release templates, as well as helpful tips on contacting the media, responding to calls from the media, interviewing techniques and additional promotional ideas.

Speaking of this Members Only resource, there is now a direct link (literally and figuratively) to our Speakers’ Bureau. Whether it’s speaking before an assembly of healthcare professionals or taking time to give your expert advice at a meeting of a local lay organization, you are enhancing both the visibility and the image of our specialty. I encourage you to let the AAAAI staff help you uncover speaking opportunities by signing up for the Bureau. The Speakers’ Bureau is now highlighted in the Patients and Consumers Center, increasing the number of opportunities for us to engage in dialog about the role of the allergist/immunologist.

Use of the AAAAI Web site, www.aaaai.org, continues to increase, especially among patients and consumers searching for information and referrals. For the benefit of both our members as well as patients seeking a specialist, we’ve made technological improvements to “Find an Allergist/Immunologist,” the physician referral directory located in the Patients and Consumers Center. This network now functions in real time. When you make a change to your contact information in our membership directory, the change will instantly appear in the referral guide.

As always, we welcome your feedback regarding Web site changes and enhancements.
