Dear colleagues:
Breaking news…
I recently had the pleasure to host the AAAAI Board of Directors Meeting in Omaha, NE. The August issue of AAAAI News will detail several action items, but I wanted to take this timely opportunity to share a few highlights that impact our members, our organization and our specialty.
- In an effort to ensure that content in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI) is relevant to the practicing allergist/immunologist, the Board endorsed adding a professional medical editor to the JACI team. This individual will be charged with editing selected articles to make them more viable to the clinical audience, and drafting content such as article summaries that highlight JACI material of particular interest to clinicians. Additionally, to increase the involvement of highly respected members of the allergy/immunology specialty whose schedules preclude involvement in day-to-day aspects of the JACI, the Board approved the establishment of a JACI Advisory Board. Details regarding this new Advisory Board, as well as other news about the JACI, will be featured in the cover story of the August issue of AAAAI News.
- Back by popular demand, the Board voted to reinstate the Chrysalis Project, giving 40 medical students the opportunity to attend the 2008 Annual Meeting.
- The Board approved alterations to the submission process for Allied Health travel grants that will promote an increased Allied Health presence at our Annual Meetings, encourage these members to become more active in the AAAAI and assist in developing future leaders for the Allied Health Professionals Assembly.
- Given the complexity and lack of conformity regarding disclosure forms, the Education and Practice & Policy divisions, as well as the full Board, spent time examining these documents to achieve an Academy-wide disclosure collection and review process. Recommendations will be sent back to the Disclosure Task Force, and we expect the document will be ratified at the November meeting of the Board of Directors.
- As we continue to strive for diverse and complete membership representation on the Board of Directors, bylaw changes were endorsed regarding the Board of Directors election process, specifically relating to the composition of the Nominating Committee. If approved by the Fellows of the AAAAI at the next Business Meeting, held during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, these endorsements would change the structure of the Nominating Committee so that it will consist of the following persons: 1) the Immediate Past-President (who shall serve as the Chair of the Committee), the President and the President-Elect; 2) one Fellow appointed by the Chair of the Interest Section Coordinating Committee; 3) one Fellow appointed by the Chair of the Program Directors Assembly; and 4) two Fellows appointed by the Chair of the Federation of Regional, State, and Local (RSL) Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Societies.
- The Board approved over $1 million in research and training grants for 2008.
- The Board agreed to a request from the Interest Section Coordinating Committee for a process relating to proposed task forces that strengthens the role of Interest Section Leadership, and avoids conflicts in areas that can be the domain of one or more Interest Sections.
Sincerely,
Thomas B. Casale, MD, FAAAAI
AAAAI President
